We all have heard that prevention is better than cure. And, we all have seen some of the other instances of fire breakouts in our life, the damage caused to the human lives and the property is massive. And, such incidents impel us to think about all that can be done to avoid such situations. Of course, you need to be careful to avoid such accidents, but even if they occur, you must be prepared beforehand so that you can minimize the loss. Seeing that cables create a major mess during fires as they emit harmful gases and black smoke, people often get stuck in the problematic zone due to poor visibility and difficulty in breathing. Moreover, you need to ensure the safe operation of critical circuits for at least some time during such fire outbreaks. The normal cables are just useless in such incidents thats why we have fire survival cables.
For this reason, Havells has developed Fire Survival Cables after extensive research. Also called circuit integrity cables, the fire survival cables are designed to sustain the high temperatures for a defined minimum period of time under direct fire. These cables maintain their integrity during a definite period of time during fires
Unlike the construction of ordinary cables, these cables are made in a different way. The conductor is manufactured with a specially designed heat barrier and fire resistant insulation which resists the fire to reach the conductor surface. The cable continues to remain into operation at high temperatures like 650°C, 750°C and 950°C as per various conditions of operation and applications.
The fire survival cables are manufactured and tested in accordance with industry standards for required temperatures and duration – depending upon the application of cable and site conditions. Havells fire survival cables are manufactured using the components like annealed plain copper conductor, heat barrier over the conductor, cross linked polyethylene, galvanised steel armour, and zero halogen & low smoke (ZHLS) compound. The ZHLS compound ensures the least smoke and thus, increased light transmission during burning of cables. The circuit integrity of Havells FS cables at high temperatures remains unaffected for the required time period as per the specification defined.
Havells Circuit Integrity Cables are duly tested for their resistance through Fire Resistance Test, Smoke Density Rating, Halogen Gas Emission Test, Oxygen Index Test, and Flammability Test as per Swedish Chimney. To make the cables work excellent in fire conditions, these cables are designed with the special properties like circuit integrity under fire at high temperatures,
and current carrying capacity due to high permissible conductor temperature, higher short circuit capacity, reluctant to overheating, high oxygen index – refrains the cable from spreading the fire, lighter in weight – easy to handle and installation, low smoke density reduces the environmental opaqueness during fire, high degree of light transmission in the event of fire, no chance of emission of halogen gasses – safe for humans, and negligible emission of toxic and corrosive gasses – diminishing the chance to damage the human body/sensitive equipment.
Considering all the above-mentioned aspects, it is sane to invest in fire survival cables. The cables are ideal to be installed at airports, refineries, shopping malls, hotels, metro stations, cinemas/theaters, hospitals, power plants, stadiums and places with high human concentration. Havells FS cables are fire resistant and are capable to continue transmission of power and signals for a specified period of time (from 30 to 180 minutes) even during the fire. They limit the fire propagation and reduce fumes and gasses which cause severe damages and loss of human lives. Cables can be a critical vehicle for the fire transmission since they run for long tracts, even in vertical ducts that could behave as chimneys and therefore, propagate the fire even in other areas. Havells uses high self-extinguishing materials and realizes constructive solutions that contrast the flame propagation. Its FS cables have LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) sheaths which have high self-extinguishing characteristic, and emit lesser fumes without halogens (corrosive gasses). So, on the whole, Fire Survival Cables are the best bet to deal with fire outbreaks responsibly.
